Clinton Young’s 3 Tips to become a World Class Speaker
While there are actually 7 tips that Clinton Young used to go from speaking for free to earning $10,000 in speaking fees all over the world almost overnight… On this episode of “I’m That Geek Web-TV Show” we discussed 3 of them that are very important to follow if you too, want to be able to become a World Class Speaker.
The first tip is: Facts Tell, but Stories Sell. If you want to inspire somebody, if you want to move somebody emotionally, if you want to have somebody feel something that you feel or, or you want them to just have clarity and be inspired about their life, or you want to get them to do something, you know that's in their best interest to do, to overcome their limiting beliefs. You've got to tell stories.
If you want to become a better storyteller then you need to start telling stories. Think about all the different pivotal moments in your life and what you learned from them. Those are the types of stories that other people need to hear.
The second tip is to tell your story in the present tense. You want to include your audience in your journey and ultimately, you start out as the driver, you are going to want to entice them to get into the car with you and become the driver themselves. When you've built so much rapport with that audience and you've really made it about them, you've shifted the concern from you over to what's in the best interest interest in my audience. How can I really make this feel like it's their journey? All of a sudden they're in the driver's seat and you become the person who's just directing it.
One of the easiest ways to do this is to tell your story in the present tense so that you audience is right there and experiencing things with you. You can also set the pace right off the bat by asking them questions to get them on the same page as you.
The Power of Three is the third tip. There is just something about the power of three that our brains like to receive information in threes. It appears that we remember the 1st and last thing we hear, so by receiving information in threes, this allows us to retain the information more easily than if there were more steps included. There is definitely power in numbers. If you want to share information with people, such as tips or steps, what are 3 steps you can think of right away that will help them get a result? Clinton gives an example of when he was a young, skinny kid in 7th grade and he wanted to get the girl and how her rejection led him to the limiting belief that he couldn’t gain weight. Then, as an adult, when he consulted an expert, he was given the advice of: “Eat your face off, workout five times a week, and never be hungry”. That’s the power of three in action.
What’s your story? What is it that you have to share with the world that other people need to hear? Commit to the journey. Whatever your journey is, commit to discovering more about who you are. Commit to discovering and creating more awareness. Because when you have more awareness of who you are and where you are right now and you have a vision for where you want to go, if you don't have that, like you're just kind of going through life plodding along. But when you get really clear about what your gifts, talents, passions are, you start taking action around them.
Then you start to get committed. You move to step two. Your awareness is step one. Step two is a commitment to growth, the commitment to lifelong learning and discovery about yourself. And when you start to do that, opportunities, new awareness to start to arise. From there, now we start to find ways to be in service to others inside of our greatest gift. That's what we're all here for. That's when you love life and you're out to create a difference for other people doing something you love.
